Become a Master Gardener

The Iowa Master Gardener training program has two components: education and volunteer service.

  • Training for Story County residents is provided by Iowa Extension Service. Classes generally start in September and run through October.
  • Training consists of 40 hours of instruction: a series of lectures (two evenings a week for 6 weeks) and one Saturday spent at Iowa State University participating in hands-on learning activities.
  • Lectures are presented by Iowa State University faculty and by Master Gardeners. About half the lectures are scheduled at the Story County Extension office in Nevada, and half are scheduled in the 4-H Building on the Iowa State Campus.
  • In order to become a certified Master Gardener, interns (who have completed the lecture series) are required to volunteer 40 hours of time to Master Gardener projects of their choosing during their first year in the program.
  • To maintain certification as a Master Gardener, 6 hours of volunteer service and 6 hours of continuing education are required every year.
